NEWCASTLE BALLET THEATRE

From Winter Park, Florida in the U.S., Rider began his training at a young age with the School of Southern Ballet Theatre (now Orlando Ballet), training under Russell Sultzbach, Eliza Harwood, Barbara Riggins and Cynthia Roses-Thema. At 15, he left Orlando to train full time at the Virginia School of the Arts studying with former Royal Ballet soloist Petrus Bosman and David Keener. During that time, he also trained at the Boston Ballet summer programs, working with Devon Carney, Bruce Marks, and Yacov Sharir among many others.
Beginning his professional career with Charleston Ballet Theatre, and later moving on to the Augusta Ballet, Eugene Ballet/Ballet Idaho and as a freelance artist, Rider danced in numerous ballets including the title roles in Romeo and Juliet and Dracula, Prince Seigfried in Swan Lake, Cavalier in The Nutcracker, Pas de Deux and Pas de Trois from Paquita, Grand pas Classique, Lar Lubovitch’s My Funny Valentine, and principal roles in Balanchine’s Serenade, Tarantella, Allegro Brilliante, and Who Cares?
Since moving to Australia, Rider has appeared as a guest performer with Melbourne Dance Theatre, Gold Coast City Ballet, & the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet.

Rider has been a guest teacher with the Canberra Dance Development Centre and Melbourne Dance Theatre, and faculty with Queensland National Ballet, Ransley Dance Centre, Amanda Bollinger Dance Academy, Anne Kingsford Academy of Dance, Sheridan’s Studio 1, and Fiona Munroe Ballet and Dance Studio.

Margaret (Meg) Akerman

Classical Ballet  -  Full Time Program

Born in Newcastle, Meg studied with Tessa Maunder. She was awarded her Solo Seal aged 15 before winning a scholarship to finish her studies at London’s Royal Ballet School. While at the School Meg demonstrated the Solo Seal syllabus for the Royal Academy of Dancing and was chosen to perform in ‘Pineapple Poll’ for the annual School Performance at Covent Garden. Shortly afterwards Peggy Van Praagh invited Meg to be a founding member of The Australian Ballet. She initially danced in the corps de ballet, progressing to soloist roles and performing with guest artists including Eric Bruhn, Sonia Arova, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, and Robert Helpmann before leaving the company to marry and settle in Sydney.
Meg then danced for a few years in a small Sydney based company which is now known as Sydney Dance Company before retiring from the stage and beginning a family.
For the next decade Meg worked in various wardrobe departments for stage, film and television programs and was wardrobe mistress at NIDA for 6 years.

Meg returned to Newcastle in 1993. Her love for classical ballet was re-ignited and she is now guest teaching and coaching senior classical ballet students.

Kristy commenced her early training with Dance Unlimited under Tanya Hearne-Keenan. In 1996 she started full time training at Tanya Pearson Classical Coaching Academy and  then went on to study at Ballet Theatre of Victoria (now Ballet Theatre Australia) under the direction of Leanne Rutherford.
In 2000, Kristy travelled to the US to take part in Artisan Dance Theatre’s summer program and went on to a 10 year professional career as a soloist and Principal Dancer with Charleston Ballet Theatre, Augusta Ballet and
Ballet Idaho/Eugene Ballet and as a freelance artist. During this time she has performed many soloist and principal roles. Most notably, The Sugarplum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Odette in Swan Lake, Mina Murray in Dracula, The Queen in The Three Musketeers, Le Corsaire Pas de Deux, and Lar Lubovitch’s My Funny Valentine.
Since returning to Australia in August 2010, Kristy has been a guest teacher at the Fiona Munroe Ballet and Dance Studio, Melbourne Dance Theatre and Canberra Dance Development Centre.
During 2011, she was on the faculty at numerous schools including
Queensland National Ballet, Ransley Dance Centre, Anne Kingsford Academy of Dance and Amanda Bollinger Dance Academy.


Kristy Tancred  ARAD

Full Time Program

Julie is originally from Emu Plains and was a qualified gymnastics coach for over ten years, primarily with De Roo’s School of Tumbling in the Penrith region. During this time she also taught tumbling and gymnsatics skills to a number of dance schools in the greater western suburbs area. Her Pilates career was a natural progression from many years coaching tumbling, trampolining and cheerleading.

Julie has been a qualified Pilates instructor for 11 years and a registered fitness instructor with Fitness Australia since 2006. Although qualified to teach all manner of group fitness, Julie is particularly passionate about mat Pilates classes and core strength training.

She has worked at a range of gyms in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains and since moving to Newcastle in 2007, has taught at Howzat, Fitness First, BodyFlight and Energize Fitness, as well as her own privately run classes.

Sally Egan
Classical Ballet  Intermediate & Junior Dancers, Contemporary, Jazz and Full Time Program

Sally completed her “Royal Academy of Dance” ballet exams at Ecole Ballet Studios in Sydney she then went on to study musical theatre full-time achieving her Certificate 4 in Performing arts at "Brent Street Studios." After graduating Sally spent two years as Artistic Director of “The Jazz Factory" before beginning a professional dance career overseas.

Sally spent 6 months in India where she danced in 13 Bollywood movies before coming home and successfully auditioning for “The Wiggles” where she toured as a dancer all over Australia and New Zealand. Sally then spent 5 years dancing all over the world for “Carnival Cruise Lines" and "Princess Cruises."

In 2012 Sally was selected for the inaugural casts of the Royal and Regal Princesses, where she was fortunate enough to spend 2 years working with acclaimed American choreographers Danny Teeson (Robbie Williams,) Liz Imperio (J.Lo and Gloria Estefan) and Sekinah Lestage (Usher.) In 2015 Sally was promoted to Production Show Supervisor where she was in charge of rehearsing and directing the casts onboard Princess ships.

Sally is thrilled to be joining the staff of Newcastle Ballet Theatre and is looking forward to sharing her passion with the NBT students!

Amelia Hayne
Classical Ballet Junior Dancers

Born on the Central Coast, Amelia started ballet at the age of three. She has trained in the RAD Syllabus from Pre-primary to Advanced 1, completing all examinations successfully, while also training in jazz, tap and contemporary. She has competed in the Isobelle Anderson awards, Sydney eisteddfod (both solo and troup) and numerous other eisteddfods. She furthers her knowledge by attending workshops and classes at any chance she gets, she has also performed in the State Dance Festival, Starstruck, and the School Spectacular . In addition, she was part of Central Dance Company Australia for 3 years.

Amelia has taught students aged 3 to 16 over the past 3 years not only in syllabus work but eisteddfod classes, privates and stretch and conditioning. 

Whilst attending a development program, Amelia obtained her certificate III in Dance and in 2016 whilst attending the Full Time Program at Newcastle Ballet Theatre, she obtained her Certificate IV in Dance.

Amelia is continuing her studies in 2017 at Newcastle Ballet Theatre in the Full Time Program, and looks forward to passing on her knowledge.
